Cutting
1. From denim, cut one 18 3/4" x 12 3/4" piece for backing, two
3 1/2" x 12 3/4" pieces for side panels and one 7" x 3 1/2"
pocket.
2. From red bandana, cut one 2 1/2" square for center, two 7
3/4" x 1 3/4" strips (D) and two 12 1/2" x 1 3/4" strips
(H).
3. From light blue print, cut two 1 1/4" x 2 1/2" strips (A).
4. From blue bandana, cut two 5 1/4" x 1 3/4" strips (C) and
two 10" x 1 3/4" strips (G).
5. From red and white print, cut two 5" x 1 3/4" strips (B).
6. From blue print, cut two 7 3/4" x 1 3/4" strips (E)
and one napkin holder 2" by 4".
7. From red print, cut two 10" x 1 3/4" strips (F). Cut
four 2 1/2" x 21" strips for binding. Trim ends diagonally.
Directions
1. Place denim backing on work surface wrong side up. Place quilt
batting on top of backing and pin it in place along the edges. You can
baste the layers together 1/4" from the edge if you wish.
2. Measure and place the red bandana square in the
center of the batting with right side up and pin it in place. Be
sure the sides of the square are parallel to the sides of the
batting/backing.
3. Right side down, pin one strip A to opposite side edges of the
center square. Stitch 1/4" from the edge, see diagram 1. Fold each
strip A out over seam so it is right side up. Finger press the seam and
pin the outer edge in place, see diagram 2.
4. With right side down, pin one strip B to top and bottom edges of
center square and the ends of strip A. Stitch 1/4" from the edge,
see diagram 3. Fold each strip B out over seam so it is right side
up. Finger press the seam and pin the outer edge in place.
5. Join the remaining strips in alphabetical order in the same
manner. Remove the pins from the outer edge of each strip as
you pin the next strip in place. Keep seams even and paralled to the
previous strip,see diagram 4.
6. Fold napkin holder in half lengthwise with right sides in. Stitch
1/4" from the long raw edge. Turn right side out and press the
napkin holder so it is flat. Pin napkin holder across center of one side
panel with the ends even with sides. Baste the ends in place 1/4"
in.
7. Turn under 1" on one short edge of pocket. Stitch hem
in place 3/4" from the fold using red thread. Place the pocket on
the lower portion of the remaining side panel. Baste sides and lower edge
in place.
8. Right sides down, pin napkin holder side panel to left side of
patchwork and pocket side panel to the right side. Stitch using a
1/4" seam allowance. Fold the side panels out over the seam
and pin the edges in place. Then baste 1/4" from outer edge of
placemat.
9. Measure and draw 2 lines dividing the pocket vertically into three
sections. Stitch along the lines using red thread.
10. Stitch ends of binding together right sides in using a 1/4" seam
allowance. Press seams open. Fold binding in half lengthwise and
press. Press under 1/4" on one end. Beginning about 3"
from one corner pin the raw edges of the binding to the edge of the
placemat. Begin stitching about 1 1/2" from finished end
and stitch to 3/8" from end of seam. Miter binding at corner
and stitch the binding to the next side again ending 3/8" from the end.
Continue around remaining sides. Trim end of binding diagonally and slip
the end inside the finished beginning end. Stitch edge in
place. Turn binding to the back side of the placemat and slipstitch the
edge in place along the seam.
