PROJECT TIP:  Nu-Foam is easy to cut even when it’s 2” thick.  Draw a line on both the top and the bottom where you want to cut.  Slide you scissors in between the layers of fiber and cut through about 1”  perpendicular to the top.  Turn the Nu-Foam over and repeat along the line on the other side.  Trim off any additional Nu-Foam in the center to join the upper and lower edge.

1.  From large print fabrics, cut two 12 1/2" squares, one for center front and one from center back.

2.  From one small print, cut four side borders 12 1/21" x 2 3/4/" and four top and bottom borders 17" x 2 3/4"

3.  From remaining small print fabric, cut two 15 1/2" x 2" strips and one 20" x 2" strip.

Directions

Cutting

Novelty print – two 16 ½” squares

Coordinating print or check – four 16 ½” x 3 Ό” side strips

Ribbon – four 18” lengths

Stitch all seams right sides together using ½” seam allowance.

  1. Cut 2” from one end of the Nu-Foam piece to make a 15” square.
  2. Center Nu-Foam along one 17” edge of  Extra-loft batting.  Wrap batting around Nu-Foam keeping it centered.
  3. Place 2 ribbons together with right sides in.  Match one end of the ribbons to end of one side strip 5/8” from top edges, see diagram.
  4. Stitch ends of side strips together beginning and ending ½” from ends of the seamline, see diagram 2.  Join all ends of the four strips in this manner.
  5. Pin the edge with ribbons at both ends to one side of one square.  This will be the back edge of the chair seat.  If the fabric is directional  (the fabric design has a definite top and bottom), then this should be the top of the design.  Stitch beginning and ending ½” from the ends of the seams, see diagram 3.  Join all edges of the sides to the top in the same manner.
  6. Join the bottom square to the sides on three sides only.
  7. Insert wrapped cushion inside the cover.  Turn under the seam allowance along the open edge and slipstitch them together.
  8. Mark positions for the buttons on both the top and bottom 5 Ό” from side edges and 5 Ό” from back and front.
  9. Use a large needle with the thread doubled in the needle and end knotted.  Insert needle at one mark on bottom and bring it out at the mark on the top.  Insert needle through holes on a button,  Stitch back down through the pillow and insert needle through a second button.  Pull the thread so buttons are indented in the pillow slightly.  Sew back and forth  through buttons so the are sewn on securely.  Knot thread under one of the buttons and trim thread.  Repeat for all buttons.
