Melody Johnson is an artist, teacher and business woman, whose hand dyed quilts are distinguishable by their use of vivid color and their exhuberance. Melody trained as a painter and began quilting as a diversion. Painting in fabrics and threads has since become her focus. Melody’s work is abstract and focused on shape, color and line. Her techniques are primarily fused fabric collage with intensive surface decoration involving hand and machine embroidery.
Her award winning quilts are exhibited internationally, including ten American Quilter’s Society Shows, Visions-Quilt San Diego ’92, ’94, ’96,’98, and 2002 and Quilt National ’95, ’97 and ’99. In 1994 she completed her Master of Arts degree from Northern Illinois University. In 1999 she was awarded the Master of Machine Artistry prize at the International Quilt Festival in Houston TX. Her works have been featured in many national and international publications, and her teaching schedule included Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, Japan, and at the New Zealand Quilt Symposium. |
